We have just imported our third Volkswagen Lupo GTI from Japan, this time around it's a Black example, we have previously imported Silver and Red versions. It is now MOT'd and registered on a 2003/53 plate as well as prepared to our usual high standards which includes a new cambelt kit & water pump, service including filters and plugs and new front brake discs & pads. We are awaiting a second key and a fuel sender unit to complete our preparation. All work has been undertaken by a VW specialist using genuine VAG parts. A set of new Toyo Proxes tyres in the correct 205/45 size have also been fitted. This particular example is a 2003 version with the preferred close ratio 6 speed gearbox. It is unmodified and has covered 102,000 miles. Just like the previous two it looks like a 12 month old UK example underneath. These pint size GTI's are proper no frills back to basics hot hatch, a low weight of just 850 kg's and a 1600 123bhp twin cam engine are all that's needed to put a smile on your face; no turbos, no ESP, and not a touchscreen anywhere! You do get power steering, airbags, air-con, ABS, electric windows and central locking though.. What makes these GTI's special is the way that they so different from the standard car they are based on. It is a creation of motorsport engineers not corporate marketeers. Firstly the engine & gearbox are unique to this model and the 200kg heavier Polo GTI. Then the bodywork is significantly changed with re profiled rear arches, wider front & rear tracks, thinner glass, a different boot floor to allow the battery to be re-located there and the doors, front wings and bonnet are all made from aluminium not steel. The Lupo was not the usual VW GTI approach of the time which was just to fit a larger engine and some sporty bits of trim. The Lupo GTI is perhaps as far removed from its base as the original BMW M3 was from the usual E30; I really do think that!. The classic car world does not seem to have woken up to all this yet but when it does I'm of the opinion that there will another significant rise in the value of these cars, something that has happened to the original Peugeot 106 Rallye.
